As blast-resistant design, which has traditionally focused on military facilities has recently expanded to civilian structures, more structural engineers are expected to have opportunities to participate in blast-design projects. In this case study, the establishment of blast-resistant design criteria and the provision of design examples by the Korea Protective Facility Institute (KPFI) have created an environment that enables structural engineers with limited or no prior blast-design experience to more readily engage in blast-design practice. Nevertheless, engineers applying newly enacted or revised criteria and examples in practical blast-resistant design for the first time may encounter practical challenges. To address these issues, this document reorganizes key elements of the design procedure and explains the required parameters at each stage, together with the rationale for their determination, to help alleviate these challenges.
